Surgery zoom – Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a surgical operation planned and performed in order to improve the appearance of the face through a correction of the
external shape and of the distance of the ears from the head.
The abnormal prominence of the ears is a congenital malformation which is essentially dued to two types of alterations: hypertrophy of
the concha or lack of the fold of the anthelix. These two alterations can also be associated.

Operation

Through an incision in the posterior part of the anthelix the aural cartilage is reshaped to create the fold of the anthelix and to reduce
the prominence of the ear. The operation is usually carried out in local anaesthesia in surgery.

Postoperative course

The ears will appear lightly edematose for some days. An elastic cap should be used for 1 or 2 days. The stichs are removed after 6-10 days.
